Internet purchase and sale exchange program
The Round Lake Park Police Department partnered with “OfferUp” to provide a safe location for community members a safe transaction site for buyers and sellers from the online market place.
The concept of the program is to protect both the buyer and seller knowing that law enforcement is watching them, they’re less likely to engage in a crime during the transaction. If something does go wrong the exchange area is under 24 hour video surveillance.
Safety Tips For Internet Exchanges
- Shop Smart – Watch out for deals that look too good to be true. Before meeting, do your research on both item and the seller. Use ratings and reviews to transact with people who have positive reputations.
- Keep personal information private – Keep communication in You app sites, messaging or chat feature to discuss the transaction.
- Meet in a sensible location – Meet in a well lit, public location and bring, or tell a friend where you’re going. Go to SafeTradeSpots.com to find your nearest Community MeetUp Spot.
- Exchange money only when you have your item – Inspect your item and don’t use 3rd party digital payment services, such as money transfers, to send payment before receiving your item.
- If in danger, call 911 – Trust your instincts. If in danger, contact police. A red auto dial phone is mounted near the doorway of the RLPPD build that auto dials to the 911 center.
